It has been a few since I posted anything here. I took a brief hiatus from solo performing as I joined up with a band for a while and then went dormant during Covid, leaving room for full-time artists to get whatever was available over those tough times.

I did not stay still during that time however, spending time rehearsing with a new band I'm helming and preparing for some new gigs in the future. More on that in a future post. In the meantime I have a few solo gigs lined up for the summer so keep your eye on the shows page for info on that.

I also posted a few new tunes so check out my music page for something fresh.

Hope to see you out there!

Dennis Malleytag:dennismalley.com,2005:Post/48340652017-09-04T02:42:57-04:002021-08-03T15:36:40-04:00News from Summer and beyond
Man, this music journey has just been such a fantastic trip! The Universe has so much to offer...

If you've been checking out my show schedule, you'll see a mix of different types of performance dates on there. I will continue to do the Electrified Acoustic Loops and Jams, performing as a solo musician with looper to create the "one man band" experience. These shows contain a selection of original music as well as a nicely curated list of off-the-beaten-path (yet familiar) cover songs. From Blondie to Michael Jackson to Beck to Gorillaz, a little different than you'll usually find in a typical singer-songwriter set.

One of the opportunities that has sprouted from my emphasis on live looping is participation in a monthly series at Mr Smalls that showcases musicians using technology to create a larger sonic soundscape. Live Loop Music Night happens the last Wednesday of every month currently, and so far I have participated in two of these events, one of which also served as a bookend for the One Human Band international festival, hosting loop artists from around the world right here in Pittsburgh! This festival was the first of what will become an annual event as we continue to build the looping/music technology community through the sponsoring organization known as PHILLTER. The second time I performed at the monthly event, I took on hosting duties and will continue to host about half of these throughout the year. I've got my sights set on a few artists both locally and nationally to come be a part of these events, so keep an eye on my calendar for future lineups.

Aside from solo performances, I've teamed up with my good friend Dave Hamilton to form the band Brother From Another Mother. We are both songwriters and started out as an acoustic duo, bringing some of our individual creations to new life through collaborative jams as well as writing new material. And the written song is just our launch pad, as we embrace the improvisation, we find just about every song's performance to be a little different than the last. Since last spring we have played over 25 shows together, grabbing a drummer and/or bass player from time to time to join us (big thanks to Sam Hogan from Stationary Pebbles for stepping to the plate on drums many times over the past year, as well as to Dustin Becker and Brandon Walsh for taking on bass duty). We have now gotten a pair of enthusiastic and dedicated rhythm monsters in Dave Resto (drums) and Brian McStay (bass). Last week we had a fantastic time at Arsenal Cider @ Soergel's, and we will be rocking the Double Wide Grill in Mars, Zelie on Tap at Zelie park, and J Hick's on the Square in Mercer in the coming months. Also check out some of our live recordings on bfam.bandcamp.com, and look for a studio release in the coming months!

I also do fill-in work for the acoustic rock trio Right Turn Clyde. These guys keep pretty busy playing all over Pittsburgh, so I take on vocal and lead guitar duties whenever their regular guy can't make it, usually about once a month. Their shows are a blast, stop by when you can!

Off the stage, I've been working my skills as a live sound engineer, and have had the privilege of running sound at James Street Gastropub and also for the Calliope Folk Music Society's concert series at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. I started out just building my rig for my own shows, and really dug in to continuing to perfect the art of sounding good live. From there it sort of took off with requests to do parties, other shows for friends' bands, and such. Next thing I knew I was jumping in with both feet, and I have a really fun time doing it - and I find it easy to talk to the performers about their needs, knowing exactly what it's like to be in their shoes. Just about every show ends with high fives from them, and I've had national acts tell me it's the best sound they've had on their tour! I'm always looking to expand on what I know, so this winter I'm going to hunker down and dive into some home recording as well as curate some of the great live recordings I've captured this past year.

What. A. Ride. From the music festivals to the bars and restaurants to the backyards to the back of the sound board, I am enjoying every minute! And I wouldn't be able to do any of it if I didn't have people like you who love to listen! So THANK YOU to each and every one of you for showing up, showing love, and loving shows! I'll see you out there!
Dennis Malleytag:dennismalley.com,2005:Post/46954562017-05-03T16:42:37-04:002021-07-17T03:42:05-04:00TribLive Musician ShowcaseMy last blog post mentioned an upcoming feature that I never ended up posting! There are some really well-written tunes in this very season-specific "genre" that elicit some fond memory or just instill that holiday magic. What better gift to share? This year I got together with the Girl Scouts to sing at a nursing home in Harmony, PA. This time last week I was just finishing up an awesome beach week! Nice to take some time off and relax. Oh but of course I still had to go scope out some potential gig spots for next year! Anyway, so far this month one show already happened, one is about to happen, and a few that might get cancelled due to weather. Just a few more and that's a wrap. Check out my shows page for more info, but here's a little recap for July, and more about what's happening this month at the end of the post.

Tackling the waves with my kid!

So July was a good one! Three action packed weekends and an odd gig here and there before the trip to Emerald Isle.

First up was the Summersounds concert series on July 1st, where I opened for Peter Mawanga and the Amaravi Movement on the big stage at St Clair Park in Greensburg. Such a nice event to be part of. Along with the performance at the park I also got to play at the nearby Mr Toad's that same night with Dave Hamilton as Brother From Another Mother (BFAM). We had a great time and were asked to come back! See you again soon Greensburg, it was a good time!

The next day was a BFAM gig at the Arsenal Cider location in Soergel Orchards Wexford. They had fresh hard cider offerings on hand and a sweet covered patio that offers a cozy environment for sipping and listening. Also very cool that it is pretty much in the middle of the Soergel campus where there's plenty to do including kids activities, shopping, ice cream, berry picking, all while still within earshot of the music. Our August gig was cancelled here due to weather, but can't wait to come back soon.

BFAM Jams Arsenal

On the 4th of July BFAM was at it again to entertain the crowds at Zelienople park. We shared the opening bill with local greats Wine and Spirit, and we both had a had a really nice afternoon set before the rain came to soak the headliner Rodger Montgomery. (he and his band still shredded it)

The following weekend started with a Friday show at the James Street Gastropub, where I ran sound for myself and a half dozen other artists for the Deutschtown Music Festival, a multi venue, multi band (over 170!!) event centered around the North Side of Pittsburgh. Our group of musicians were in the dining room amid a huge crowd along with bands thumping upstairs and downstairs. It was a great way to kick off the Festival!

The Chiodi Trio kicks off Deutschtown

The next Morning I performed at the Butler City Farmer's Market, sort of a tame and quiet gig that was the perfect complement to the prior night's revelry.

On to the next weekend, another three-gigger. First up was a Friday evening with Dave and drummer Sam Hogan as yet another iteration of Brother From Another Mother. Sam's regular gig is with the band Stationary Pebbles, but he's been sitting in with us a lot lately whenever he has an opening in his schedule. The three of us headed up to Cooper's Lake Campground to kick off this year's Band Jam Grass Roots Music Festival. Such good vibes, we need to get up here again next year, and hope to see you there as well.

Band Jam sound check

The next day was a whole day of running sound and performing for a private party at "Ray's Rach" in Butler. Rich Hein and his brother know how to put together a party. Not one, but two stages of bands. Food galore, beer kegs (with refrigerated backups on site!), and loads of space to spread out and dance, camp and explore. There were some great bands on the ticket that night, including Ronnie Gunn's band Black Moshannon and Pittsburgh party rockers Rat Tits (lol). I was also spontaneously joined by some other musicians for some improv jamming. I love when that happens!

Finally, I wrapped up the weekend with a gig at the good old local Sports Grille in Cranberry Township. So close to my house I can hear when bands are playing there. My kind of digs. Nice outdoor patio, great beer and food. Their season is winding down, but there's an off chance I might get in there once more before the summer's over. If not I definitely hope to play there a lot more next year.

Last but not least I squeezed in one final gig before heading off to the beach literally the morning after. I joined my old buds in Right Turn Clyde to entertain at the Wood Fired Grill in Irwin PA. This was really nicely furnished spot with a ton of great beers and tasty eats. Usually when a place is named after their cooking apparatus the food turns out to be pretty darn good.

And so hey that was my July - on to August! As always check for more details including map to the venue, address, set times, relevant links, and of course any updates at my shows page.

August 11 - Pittsburgh Acoustic Challenge - this one already happened by the time I got this post up. It was fun, I'll recap next month!

August 12 - Rock All Night Tour (RANT) music festival. I'm hosting the open mic at Hambone's I'm literally gonna click to publish this post and head off to this one.

August 13 - Music at the Marina in Goddard State Park. - a quick set, myself and other perfomers of the pittsburgh Songwriters Circle are sharing an hour. (weather pending). Brother from another mother also had a set booked at Arsenal Cider in Wexford, but that one got called on account of rain (well really more due to thunder)

August 20th - BFAM at Slippery Rock Farmers Market. - A really chill morning gig from 9-noon at magical Rock Falls Park

And that...is it. I little chilled out this month. I reckon September will pick up again, already lots of stuff in the works. See you out there soon!
Dennis Malleytag:dennismalley.com,2005:Post/42537852016-06-29T13:18:23-04:002021-08-03T05:45:28-04:00The Force of July
June is almost over. What!? This summer is just flying by.

It's been a great one so far though, lots of twists and turns that keep me on this continuous evolutionary journey of sonic exploration.

Ok, that was just a long way of saying "I keep on keepin on." This past month was another busy one! (Scroll down to the bottom or check out my shows page if you just want to see where I'm gonna be and not where I was)

When the month started we were neck deep in the Penguins playoffs. In fact due to the playoff schedule I got one more gig tacked on to the end of May at the last minute, making a return appearance at the Beerhead Bar right next to PNC park. The timeslot was a perfect fill between the afternoon Pirates game and the big game 7 to decide who would advance to the Stanley Cup Final series!. The streets were totally closed off around the bar and crowds were everywhere! We had a blast at Beerhead, even pulling a few random folks up on stage to sing with me. I got to cheer with the bar crowd (while I packed up my gear) as we watched the Pens finish off the series.

Beerhead Bar patrons celebrate another Penguins victory!

For the first weekend of June, I had a three-gig run.

On Friday I helped kick off the Layer Cake Music Festival by playing an early evening set at the James Street Gastropub's dining room. At the same time, my good friends in the Stationary Pebbles were rocking it out in the upstairs ballroom. And another artist was jamming in the basement speakeasy. There was no shortage of music to be had all around as four venues joined in the fun to host over 170 bands over the course of Friday and Saturday.

Playing the James Street Dining Room

Afterward I headed up to New Castle for a return visit to The Commonwealth. This time I was joined by Dave Hamilton as we continue to do duo shows under the name Brother From Another Mother, or BFAM for short. You'll start to see a lot of BFAM shows in my schedule going forward. We are also working on getting a full band lineup and have been joined on stage by various guest musicians as well. Most of the time we start off with a specific song list but then just cut loose and improvise and have been coming up with some crazy stuff. It really is a blast, no two shows are the same, and that's just the way I like it.

BFAM Jams the Commonwealth

The third gig of the weekend was at a boat launch site, actually a ribbon cutting celebration, as the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance commemorated the opening of two new launches along the Connequenessing Creek. This was another BFAM event, and since Stationary Pebbles were there to play after us, we got joined by their rhythm section, Sam on drums and Brandon on bass. They ripped it up!

Jamming the boat launch with special guests Brandon and Sam!

A week later I played at the Harmony Springfest, an annual event in the little town of Harmony. It's kind of like a Farmer's Market for the start of the season - the centerpiece being lots of starter plants for sale to get the garden going, with lots of other great activities and vendors throughout town. We made part of this a BFAM jam as well.

That following weekend started early with a Thursday gig at The Sports Grille, that I had initially cancelled due to rain. But after the worst of it passed I saw blue skies, and I got a text from my friend Biddy telling me he and about a dozen other people had arrived for the happy hour show! So I hightailed it down there, management was accommodating, and I set up and played a slightly smaller set!

Nice patio space at the Sports Grille

Friday was a fun gig running sound for Old Game, with When Particles Collide and Zoob. I got to decipher the sound system at Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, ironically where I started out about six years ago when I decided to get back to live performing after a long hiatus.

Old Game rocks BBT

Saturday was a LOT of fun, playing in the great Zelienople amphitheater. I also got to help run sound there - me and Dave were sandwiched between two awesome bands, The Chop Shop and Bees Trees. If you haven't seen a Zelie amphitheater show, you need to get up there!

Chop Shop with Sirkus Days fire dancer

With one more weekend left in June, BFAM played out in Freeport in a great little park next to Wolfie's Pizza Hearth. George Wolfe (Wolfie's owner) joined us on drums, and the perfect weather along with a very enthusiastic crowd made this event that much more special. We will be back!

Wolfie's outdoors on a warm summer day!

And with less than a week left in the month we squeezed in one more gig on Monday at the Zelienople-Harmony Farmer's Market. Dave and I played for an appreciative group of vendors and the occasional customer who decided to brave the heat. The biggest crowd was at the nearby pool, so we gave them a shout a few times throughout the set as well. The best part was going home with a bunch of homemade/home grown market goods!

So with June wrapped up it's time to get on with the July schedule!

Here's what's coming up (more details on my shows page):

July 1: Greensburg's Summersounds concert series. Wow what fun was had in May! Things are moving along pretty solid here in Den land.

The time of the year for outdoor events is upon us, and with May taking on the typically April showers this year, you win some and you lose some. My first event of the month was May 1st, the Pittsburgh Marathon, and after getting things off to a rain-soaked start, we were able to enjoy some rather mild weather for the rest of the day and entertain the runners as they made their way to the finish line. I was joined by a few fellow songwriters that day from the Pittsburgh Songwriter's Circle for an enjoyable day of fun music.

Dori Cameron entertaining runners at the Pittsburgh Marathon

Next up was Ragoo Festivoo, where I had a relatively short but sweet set on the acoustic stage. Even though the nights were a little chilly, and we had some rain spotting throughout the day, all in all it was a fabulous weekend with plenty of awesome bands to kick off the season up at gorgeous Rock Falls Park.

Slightly soggy Raggoo revelers.

The following week took me indoors to my first gig at Beerhead Bar where the mild weather prompted them to fling open the garage-style window/doors and let the music spill out onto the streets. I also got to invite Dave Hamilton up to join me for several songs as we continue our journey as Brother From Another Mother. What a fun night! Shout out to my cousin and his girlfriend as well as few other friends for making it out to see me! Also kudos to the several couples who were moved to dance during most of my set!

<img src="//d10j3mvrs1suex.cloudfront.net/u/197002/8ffe096d2518d708b1259d207b63bfc4dd3dc976/large/beerhead.jpg?1464033492" class="size_l justify_center border_none" alt="Beerhead Bar's very cool open patio setup. The stage is about 20 feet from that big open window.

The next event was another outdoor venture and this time the weather was perfect! It was the grand opening of the Harmony Inn's outdoor patio area and we had a fantastic crowd to join us as Dave Hamilton and I did a set as Brother From Another Mother. Also playing that day was Wine and Spirit, Steve Short from Stationary Pebbles, Aaron Shaffer, and to wrap up the night, The Skipper Johnson Band put on a great set! Once again we got a good bit of rain, but our great placement right by the park's bridge allowed us to retreat from the rain (and keep our equipment dry)! The show went on, and we still had a good handful of appreciative listeners. Actually the coolest part was how the bridge formed this sort of natural echo/reverb chamber! I plan to go back there to record a few things and see how it turns out.

Before, and...

after the rain

My first gig of April happened in the midst of a snowy frigid day that hearkened back the the last time we played at the Kline's House Party back in January! Reprising the role of "The Replacements," five musicians - Biddy Nye, Sam Giannetti, Marcy Brown, Jeff Wiley, and myself - put together a nice variety of music to entertain the crowd. Everyone on the stage took the lead at one point in the evening or another, making for a wide musical palette that kept the crowd clamoring for more. Big thanks also to Greg and Goose for jumping in on washtub bass and harmonica respectively. Thanks also to Larry Franklin for sharing his photos with us! Check out his shots here.

I saw a lot of friends at the Quaker Steak and Lube gig on March 12th. We had a wonderful night! I also managed to squeeze in a last minute gig that same afternoon performing for the parade crowd down at Bar Louie on the North Shore. That gig came about when me and the guys from Right Turn Clyde played there that Thursday night. Also had a blast up in Butler, and I made some new friends opening for the band Red Room Effect up at the Monroe Hotel. These guys are the real deal and great entertainers! Check them out on Facebook and Bandcamp!

But my favorite gig last month was the annual trek to Girardville, PA for the gigantic St Patrick's Parade and celebration. Such a rich history in this little Irish coal mining town, and our host Joe Wayne is as gracious as they come. This year our group was small - just Biddy Nye and I were performing, but we worked hard to learn all the Irish tunes and carry on the long standing tradition of the Pittsburgh Breaker Boys' journey to the Hibernian House. We entertained Joe's bar crowd for two nights and he put us up in hotel rooms above the bar. Friday night we played till the wee hours and woke up at 8am Saturday morning to a barful of wall to wall revelers already getting their drink on! We also managed to make our way over to a nearby house during the day on Saturday, where a few families had joined forces to lay out a giant spread of delicious food, and we entertained passersby from their garage. Many joined us in song, and we even had a bagpipe band's drummer stop and join in for a bit. All in all it was a fantastic weekend.

So what's in store for April?

On the 9th I'll be joining up with Biddy Nye, Sam Gianetti, Marcy Brown, and Jeff Wiley to reprise the role of "The Replacements" - this was the moniker we took when we played in place of a snowed out West Virginia band at the Kline's House Party back January. We got a great response so we return for another round!

On the 16th I'll be back at The Commonwealth - last time I played there they were serving subs, and it looks like since then, they've changed over to burritos as their staple fare. Oh and of course beer. I had a wonderful time playing here in February, such a great room and a great crowd! Looking forward to doing it again.

The following week I'm going to be busy - first stop, 4/20 at Reclamation Brewing in Butler. I've been up here to see friends play, and this will be my first turn at the wheel. This place brews some really good beer and has a great sounding room, so come on out!

The next night I'm back at Bar Louie North Shore with Right Turn Clyde! This is becoming somewhat of a regular gig, it's a really nice place, and fairly new. Great food and beer selection. Huge room where you can choose to sidle up to the bar, lounge in a booth or on a couch, or hang at a table.

Two days later on the 23rd I'll be playing in the bar area at Pizza Roma in Sewickley. I haven't played here in a while and I'm looking forward to it! I like getting into different parts of town to give fans a variety of options for catching a show. Hope to see you here.

For now that's it, check out my schedule for all the details. Half a dozen gigs to start things off, and many collaboration projects to boot. Music has brought so many opportunities to meet great new people - performers and fans alike. House parties, pizza shop jams, jumping in with other bands, last minute gigs. What a blast! And things are just getting started.

March will have me doing two St Patrick's day shows, one at Quaker Steak in Cranberry on March 12th, then the following weekend I'll be heading up to Girardville PA for the annual St Patrick's day celebration for a weekend of entertaining. Finally, I'll round out the month with a show on the 25th, opening for the band Red Room Effect at the Monroe Hotel in Butler. Oh and April's not looking to shabby either! Go check out my shows schedule for the full rundown, and hope to see you out there somewhere!

And as always, THANKS for your support!

Here's a pic from last year's Girardville celebration.
